Tentacle tip with stained cnidodcyte capsules

Postdoc mentoring looks different from students. As a temporary position on your way to becoming an independent investigator, you have to balance working toward your PI’s goals while establishing your own distinct research program, and eventually preparing for interviews.

I am aware of this and hope to work with postdocs to achieve common goals (I am paying you to do work for this lab) and also help you toward your next step by positioning you for success (My job as mentor is to make you competitive and guide you toward independence).

Postdocs are strongly encouraged to explore their own projects and interests in addition to working on the lab’s main organism and system, light sensing in Nematostella. There are a lot of projects that can combine your interests while still furthering the goals of this lab, and/or new directions or new species can be incorporated. The level of freedom for a postdoc’s interests is directly related to their experience level and external funding.

If you do not come with funding I require everyone to apply for postdoc fellowships. External funding will not only help you get a job but will also allow you more freedom to pursue your own interests in my lab, and it will extend the time you have to complete an impactful project in the lab.

I am currently unable to accept a postdoc without external funding. If you are nearing completion of PhD or another postdoc position and you are interested in joining the lab, I am happy to help you write applications for funding to get into the lab. Please contact me early so we can build a competitive application package.
