Undergrad opportunities in the McCulloch Lab
Joining the Lab
The McCulloch Lab usually has one to a few undergrad openings each semester. Due to high demand, usually there is not enough space in the lab for everybody who wants to do research. As of Fall 2025 we are at capacity but check back for the spring. All undergrad researchers are expected to do at least 10 hours a week in the lab during the school year.
With that said, it doesn’t hurt to send an email to see if anything is open. At times when we need a few people I will advertise positions directly on the CUR Canvas page.
When you write please tell me why you want to work in the lab, I appreciate motivation and dedication to the lab much more than direct experience (although experience never hurts). Please note if no positions are available I may not write back right away, however when the time comes to find new undergrad workers your name might come up as one the top candidates having already emailed me.
Lab Environment
In the lab we are pretty laid back and I am invested in mentoring and helping you with your career goals. You will also be treated as an adult. You are responsible for being on time, making your hours and schedule, asking when something doesn’t make sense, being present at the job you are doing. This also means there is no tolerance for any sort of disrespect, harassment, or discrimination of any kind toward anyone in the lab. If you are incapable of following these very basic rules you will be let go quickly. In my experience almost everyone in lab has a good time and these do not need to be stated, but it’s worth mentioning.
Undergrads who work in my lab are all involved in real research projects and most are successful at getting their names as a co-author on a peer-reviewed scientific journal article and some even get first author articles as undergrads.
